Spider-Man: Brand New Day' Just Shattered Every Box Office Record in the Book
Tom Holland's Spider-Man has officially done what no superhero film has done before: outrun Avengers: Endgame at the domestic box office. Sony Pictures confirmed that director Destin Daniel Cretton's Spider-Man: Brand New Day has landed the highest-grossing first week in domestic box office history, surpassing 500 million dollars in North America in just seven days and becoming the fastest film ever to hit that half-billion mark. For comparison, Endgame needed eight days to get there when it opened back in April 2019.
And Spidey isn't slowing down. As of this week, the film's domestic running total has climbed past 449 million dollars in its first five days alone, putting it on pace to overtake Toy Story 5 as the highest grossing film of the year in North America. Overseas, the numbers are just as staggering: Brand New Day has pulled in more than 706 million dollars internationally, already the biggest foreign haul of any movie so far in 2026, ahead of both Michael's 643.7 million dollars and Toy Story 5's 604.8 million dollars. Combined, that puts the film's worldwide total north of 1.1 billion dollars, officially making it the highest grossing movie of 2026 globally, edging out Toy Story 5's 1.07 billion dollar total.
Breaking Records at a Head Spinning Pace
This isn't a film that broke one record and called it a day. Brand New Day has been rewriting the box office history books practically every 24 hours since it opened.
It set the record for the biggest Thursday preview haul ever. It followed that with the top Friday domestic sum in history. Then came the single biggest opening weekend of all time, with Sony confirming a 360 million dollar three day domestic total that edged out Endgame's previous record of 357.1 million dollars, though Endgame's massive 1.2 billion dollar global opening weekend still stands as the biggest worldwide launch ever recorded.
The film didn't stop there. It delivered the highest-grossing Monday in box office history, beating a record previously held by Black Panther. Then it broke the record for the best Tuesday ever at the domestic box office. Along the way, it became the fastest film in history to cross 400 million dollars domestically, doing so in just four days.
On the global stage, Sony announced that Brand New Day crossed the 1 billion dollar mark in only six days of release, the second fastest film ever to do so, trailing only Endgame's five day record from 2019. That makes it one of the fastest billion dollar blockbusters in cinema history, and industry analysts now believe the film is realistically on track to reach 2 billion dollars worldwide before its theatrical run ends, a milestone only a handful of films in history have ever touched.
The Team Behind the Web
Brand New Day comes from producers Marvel Studios and Amy Pascal, carrying a reported 225 million dollar production budget, a figure that now looks like an easy bet given the film's staggering return. Alongside Tom Holland, the film stars Zendaya, Sadie Sink, Jacob Batalon, Jon Bernthal and Mark Ruffalo, and is directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, best known for helming Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. The story follows Marvel's signature hero enduring a lonely, isolated stretch of life without the people closest to him, before an unseen enemy tracks him down and forces him back into action.
Audiences appear to be responding to more than just the spectacle. The film holds an A CinemaScore and a remarkable 98 percent audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, numbers that suggest the box office surge is being driven by genuine word of mouth rather than opening weekend hype alone.
Sony Isn't Surprised by Holland and Zendaya's Pull
Speaking about the film's success, Sony Pictures chief Tom Rothman pushed back on any suggestion that audience interest in stars Holland and Zendaya is some kind of passing trend. He credited their talent and work ethic directly, describing them as genuinely grounded, hardworking people who have earned their level of success rather than simply benefiting from public curiosity about their off screen relationship.
Rothman also used the moment to make a broader statement about the health of the theatrical film industry, pushing back on years of predictions that streaming would eventually kill the traditional box office. According to him, the numbers now prove exactly the opposite: the theatrical marketplace is thriving, not dying.
What's Next for Brand New Day
Sony projects that Brand New Day will keep pulling in audiences over the coming weeks as the summer season winds down, even as fresh competition arrives with wide releases including One Night Only, Super Troopers 3 and Ice Cream Man. None of those titles are expected to seriously dent Spider-Man's momentum in the near term.
With Marvel Studios now holding four of the biggest worldwide opening weekends of all time, alongside Endgame, Spider-Man: No Way Home and Avengers: Infinity War, Brand New Day has cemented itself as proof that the superhero genre, far from being fatigued, can still deliver once in a generation box office numbers when the right story and the right cast come together.
